RETAZOS – flamenco dance recital by Julio Ruiz

7.30pm Saturday 16 October, Didsbury Baptist Church M20 6SX

A fantastic evening of traditional flamenco with national prize winning young artists from Spain. Dancer and artistic director Julio Ruiz brings this flamenco dance recital with two outstanding musicians – singer Cristo Heredia and guitarist David Caro. Already respected performers and teachers in their own right, mostly based in Madrid, Almeria and Sevilla respectively, they perform together regularly between tours and other engagements. Jairo Amaya is an internationally acclaimed dancer and teacher based in Jerez. Starting his professional dance career at the age of 16, he initially toured as part of the dance company of Maria del Mar Moreno and then as a soloist and teacher across Europe, Israel and the USA. When in his native Jerez, Jairo works in all of the most popular tablaos and penas (flamenco venues) as well as teaching in his own studios. His style is distinctively Jerezano, combining strength and force with the ‘sonequette’ and musical quality that is famous in this ‘cradle of flamenco’.
Cristo Heredia is from a flamenco family in Almeria, both his grandfather and father also being singers. A cantaor (flamenco singer) for dance from the age of 13, he formally debuted at the annual festival of Fondón de Almería with Tomatito at the age of 14 years. He has performed all over Spain and joined other world famous artists on tour, including Niño Josele, La Lupi and Juan de Juan. At the age of 19, Paco de Lucia requested his presence on the ‘Good Things’ tour. His recordings include ‘Almeraya’.
