These two classes will provide an introduction to flamenco dance, suitable for beginners and improvers. Come along if you have not tried flamenco dance before, or if it has been a while and you are a bit rusty!
Dancers at a higher level are very welcome to come and brush up on footwork, palmas and structure.
I will be covering basic flamenco technique and the different percussive dance steps, compas (rhythm), palmas (clapping) and body work. The second class will incorporate these into a short choreography in the alegrias palo, together with simple palmas to accompany the dance.

Saturday 30th June and 7th July
1-2pm Flamenco technique
Follow up classes will be offered in the autumn.
Saturday 16th June, 1-2.30pm La Suerte Dance School. Fin de fiesta por tangos – Beginner/improver flamenco dance workshop
This cheerful/up tempo class is suitable for complete beginners, or improvers who want to prepare some fin de fiesta tangos to join in at flamenco events. It will cover palmas (clapping), finding the base compas (rhythm) in the music, hand and arm coordination (plus exercises to continue at home), easy footwork and how to fit the dance with typical tangos songs. For improvers this is an interesting variation to the more traditional flamenco tangos as it is designed to be danced at fiestas/juergas and is a popular alternative to fiesta por bulerias.
Saturday 16th June, 2.45 – 4.45pm La Suerte Dance School. Extend your choreography in 12 – Intermediate dance workshop
This class will cover various pieces of rhythmic footwork and contratiempos, showing how to adapt them for different palos in 12 and how to extend or vary your choreography. Students will learn blocks of footwork and some useful remates and then start to learn how to use these in different ways in order to amplify their existing repertoire. The sequences will be shown with accompaniment for Soléa por Buleria, Alegrias, and Solea.
Cost is £25, places are confirmed on payment
Cost if booked with the Fin de fiesta por tangos £40

Alegrias workshop with John Walsh Sunday 25rd of March, 10:30 – 5 pm Rogue Studios, Varna St Manchester
An intensive day studying Alegrias. The workshop will be focused around accompaniment for Cante.
But will also include lots of technique, remates and a few falsettas.
This workshop will cover routines for improving your improvisation, improvisation and creativity exercises and developing your confidence. This will be a fun practical workshop, rather than a theoretical one.
The workshop will take place at Rogue Artists’ Studios new site at the former Varna Street Primary School in Gorton. Full details will be provided when booking.
Dance students will learn technique, some choreography as well as an introduction to flamenco singing. All of these courses include a short break and the last hour will consist of a ‘Join the Dots’ session where all of the groups join together and learn how the dance, guitar and singing connect.
The workshops will cover Tangos and Bulerías for both dancers and guitarists. The palos will be explained and material will then be put into practice in the ‘Join the Dots’ session where guitarists and dancers join with the fantastic singer Anna Colom! It’s a brilliant and unique opportunity to experience live singing, asking any questions you might have and also to learn essential skills for your own performances. This material is great for fin de fiesta and also for finishing a solo dance.
