Flamenco cante and workshops, from Granada

Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October

Antonio Heredia Heredia and Francesca Girone will be giving cante (flamenco song), dance and palmas (flamenco clapping) workshops in Manchester city centre.  They will also be joining Sarah Chambers to host an informal flamenco show in Didsbury on Saturday 20th October at 8pm.  This weekend is a rare chance to learn and enjoy flamenco song at its highest level, from a professional gitano singer.

Antonio has been singing professionally since he was 14 years old.  He has sung for world class dancers including Belén López, Antonio Canales, El Carpeta, El Torombo and El Choro, featuring in some of Spain’s leading flamenco festivals.  He works in the popular tablaos and peñas in his native Granada between these events.  Francesca is a dancer and events organiser based in Mojacar – Almeria.  She has worked with Sarah and other Manchester flamenco enthusiasts to bring two of her professional shows to Manchester, performing as well as coordinating.  Both Antonio and Francesca are bringing the traditional flamenco ‘puro’, Antonio having been born into a respected gypsy flamenco family and Francesca having studied and performed with gitanos for many years in Andalucia.

Provisional bookings for workshops and the show will be held until 30 September.  Bookings are confirmed on payment and an ‘early bird’ discount is available until 30 September.  Bookings are via Sarah, espiritu.flamenco@virginmedia.com

Flamenco Dance Introduction

With Sarah Chambers

These two classes will provide an introduction to flamenco dance, suitable for beginners and improvers. Come along if you have not tried flamenco dance before, or if it has been a while and you are a bit rusty!
Dancers at a higher level are very welcome to come and brush up on footwork, palmas and structure.

I will be covering basic flamenco technique and the different percussive dance steps, compas (rhythm), palmas (clapping) and body work. The second class will incorporate these into a short choreography in the alegrias palo, together with simple palmas to accompany the dance.
Here is a clip that gives good examples of the alegrias song form: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz1hfI7sneU

Saturday 30th June and 7th July
1-2pm Flamenco technique
2-3pm Alegrias
Bookings: sa.chambers3546@virginmedia.com
Follow up classes will be offered in the autumn.

Flamenco dance workshops with Francesca Girone

IMG_0736Saturday 16th June, 1-2.30pm La Suerte Dance School.  Fin de fiesta por tangos – Beginner/improver flamenco dance workshop

This cheerful/up tempo class is suitable for complete beginners, or improvers who want to prepare some fin de fiesta tangos to join in at flamenco events. It will cover palmas (clapping), finding the base compas (rhythm) in the music, hand and arm coordination (plus exercises to continue at home), easy footwork and how to fit the dance with typical tangos songs.  For improvers this is an interesting variation to the more traditional flamenco tangos as it is designed to be danced at fiestas/juergas and is a popular alternative to fiesta por bulerias.

Cost is £18, places are confirmed on payment
For bookings, contact Sarah at sa.chambers3546@virginmedia.com

Saturday 16th June, 2.45 – 4.45pm La Suerte Dance School. Extend your choreography in 12 – Intermediate dance workshop

This class will cover various pieces of rhythmic footwork and contratiempos, showing how to adapt them for different palos in 12 and how to extend or vary your choreography. Students will learn blocks of footwork and some useful remates and then start to learn how to use these in different ways in order to amplify their existing repertoire. The sequences will be shown with accompaniment for Soléa por Buleria, Alegrias, and Solea.

Cost is £25, places are confirmed on payment
Cost if booked with the Fin de fiesta por tangos £40

We are proud to announce that on Friday 3rd February 2017, some of Granada’s leading flamenco artists will be returning to Manchester for a performance of ‘HERENCIA’ (‘Heritage’), a history of flamenco in the Sacromonte district of Granada. This will include songs that are part of Granada’s heritage – traditional forms of gypsy songs, passed on between generations of families in the Sacromonte district including the families of the artists themselves. This is pure, raw, passionate gypsy flamenco from the heart of Granada. Tickets from Sarah Chambers at sa.chambers@virgin.net

Performance starts at 8pm

The artists:
Paco Fernandes – Baile (dance)
‘ El Principe Gitano’…one of Granada’s leading male flamenco dance artists and although still young in years he carries a wealth of experience at both national and international level. He combines a mix of technique and strength which he delivers in his own unique style.
Alejandro ‘ El Gambibas’ – Cantaor (singer)
Despite his young age he has a maturity and depth of voice that one can only describe as ‘el cante gitano puro’ (pure, deep gypsy song). Although he lives in Granada, he performs all over Spain and has been regularly contracted overseas in the last few years, especially in London and Brighton.
Manuel Cortes Heredia – Guitar
A popular Granada guitarist, he works regularly with some of Granada’s leading artists in several of the more prestigious Flamenco Tablaos (flamenco venues). His style reflects his maturity and calm persona. A lifelong musician and expert accompanist, he has years of professional experience working with singers and dancers at the highest level.
Francesca Girone ‘ La Gitana Inglesa’ – Baile (dance);
Born in Manchester, she has learnt her flamenco skills in Granada, Jerez and Almería. Aside from her regular flamenco performances in Spain where she resides, she is also a keen and successful Flamenco events organiser.

Flamenco workshops 4/5 Feb

herencia-flamenca

We are delighted to announce that the team from Granada will be returning to give dance, guitar and palmas workshops on Saturday 4th February and Sunday 5th February, after great feedback from their previous workshops.

The dance and palmas courses are with one of Granada’s leading artists, Paco Fernández. Paco works at world class level and brings a wealth of experience with him. He is a regular performer in the Granada tablaos (flamenco venues), including the leading tablao ‘El Templo de Flamenco’ and has toured Europe and Russia. He is also a patient and highly enthusiastic teacher who instils confidence in his students. We received excellent feedback from participants on his previous courses. There will be an opportunity to join with Alejandro and Manuel and learn how the baile fits with the cante and guitar.

Alongside these courses, we will be offering a guitar course, delivered by Manuel Cortes Heredia – a lifelong musician and expert accompanist, who is a regular in ‘El Templo de Flamenco’. Manuel has years of professional experience working with singers and dancers at the highest level and his teaching is patient and clear. We received excellent feedback from participants on his previous course. The focus of this February’s course is on how to accompany cante and baile – how to follow both the singer and the dancer and the interaction beween the two of them. There will be an opportunity to accompany Paco and Alejandro to put the class into practice.

Francesca and Eduardo Girone will again be translating for the classes. Francesca dances with the artists in Spain and they are both very knowledgeable about flamenco.

Course levels

Jaleos are a palo whose musical elements originate from the bulerias and solea. The dances for jaleos were very popular in the middle of the 19th century in the cafes cantantes and theatres. In many ways a jaleo is like a slow bulerias and it is thought that some originate from the Extremadura region.
