We are thrilled to host a concert and workshops by singer Alicia Carrasco and guitarist Jose Manuel Leon.
On Sunday 21st May they will present their project Mujer Klórica. Drawing on the history of Flamenco as a political art form, their songs explore themes of social justice, tolerance and the role of women in Flamenco. Musically they mix traditional flamenco forms with elements of jazz and experimental music.
Alicia and Jose have worked with artists such as Carmen Linares and Gerado Nuñez and are recognised as leading innovative flamenco artists in Spain. They will be joined by percussionist Ruven Rippik and the concert will also feature a number of solo pieces by Jose.
During the afternoon there will be workshops for guitarists and people wanting to learn and try flamenco cante, the rhythm and the meaning behind the words. Both workshops will focus on Alegrias. These will be very limited in numbers and can be booked through the links below.

‘Herencia Flamenca’ – Granada flamenco artists return to Manchester with their new show!
We are proud to announce that on Friday 3rd February 2017, some of Granada’s leading flamenco artists will be returning to Manchester for a performance of ‘HERENCIA’ (‘Heritage’), a history of flamenco in the Sacromonte district of Granada. This will include songs that are part of Granada’s heritage – traditional forms of gypsy songs, passed on between generations of families in the Sacromonte district including the families of the artists themselves. This is pure, raw, passionate gypsy flamenco from the heart of Granada. Tickets from Sarah Chambers at sa.chambers@virgin.net
£12 Advance / £10 Advance concession / £15 Door / £12 Door concession
Venue: Didsbury Baptist Church, School Lane, Didsbury M20 6SX (opposite Didsbury Village Metro Station)
Performance starts at 8pm
The artists:
Paco Fernandes – Baile (dance)
‘ El Principe Gitano’…one of Granada’s leading male flamenco dance artists and although still young in years he carries a wealth of experience at both national and international level. He combines a mix of technique and strength which he delivers in his own unique style.
Alejandro ‘ El Gambibas’ – Cantaor (singer)
Despite his young age he has a maturity and depth of voice that one can only describe as ‘el cante gitano puro’ (pure, deep gypsy song). Although he lives in Granada, he performs all over Spain and has been regularly contracted overseas in the last few years, especially in London and Brighton.
Manuel Cortes Heredia – Guitar
A popular Granada guitarist, he works regularly with some of Granada’s leading artists in several of the more prestigious Flamenco Tablaos (flamenco venues). His style reflects his maturity and calm persona. A lifelong musician and expert accompanist, he has years of professional experience working with singers and dancers at the highest level.
Francesca Girone ‘ La Gitana Inglesa’ – Baile (dance);
Born in Manchester, she has learnt her flamenco skills in Granada, Jerez and Almería. Aside from her regular flamenco performances in Spain where she resides, she is also a keen and successful Flamenco events organiser.

We are delighted to announce that the team from Granada will be returning to give dance, guitar and palmas workshops on Saturday 4th February and Sunday 5th February, after great feedback from their previous workshops.
The dance and palmas courses are with one of Granada’s leading artists, Paco Fernández. Paco works at world class level and brings a wealth of experience with him. He is a regular performer in the Granada tablaos (flamenco venues), including the leading tablao ‘El Templo de Flamenco’ and has toured Europe and Russia. He is also a patient and highly enthusiastic teacher who instils confidence in his students. We received excellent feedback from participants on his previous courses. There will be an opportunity to join with Alejandro and Manuel and learn how the baile fits with the cante and guitar.
Alongside these courses, we will be offering a guitar course, delivered by Manuel Cortes Heredia – a lifelong musician and expert accompanist, who is a regular in ‘El Templo de Flamenco’. Manuel has years of professional experience working with singers and dancers at the highest level and his teaching is patient and clear. We received excellent feedback from participants on his previous course. The focus of this February’s course is on how to accompany cante and baile – how to follow both the singer and the dancer and the interaction beween the two of them. There will be an opportunity to accompany Paco and Alejandro to put the class into practice.
Francesca and Eduardo Girone will again be translating for the classes. Francesca dances with the artists in Spain and they are both very knowledgeable about flamenco.

This should be great !
Born in La Línea de la Concepción (Cadiz, Spain), dancer and coreographer David Morales started his artistic career at the early age of 6 years old. He has taken part in most of the main Flamenco festivals of the late 70´s, sharing the stage with big flamenco artists such as Camarón de la Isla, Fosforito, Paco Cepero and Chiquetete.
Although that early starting career, his artistic path was planned for a long term. This way, he has gained a very respectable career through three decades, including several stages of Flamenco and with the advantage that he’s still a thirty something talented man.
Instituto Cervantes in Manchester is very proud to introduce this incredible young artist with a company of a female dancer (bailaora), a guitarist and a singer (cantaor).
